Road Trip Diaries: Franz Josef to Wanaka

The drive from Franz Josef to Wanaka was the epitome of the South Island. In the span of 4-5 hours, we drove past glaciers, through lush tropical forest, and then were met with huge, snowcapped mountains surrounded by jewel-toned lakes. It also didn’t hurt that it was a beautiful day.




All doubts that I had felt in the first couple of days on the South Island were completely erased that day.


We arrived in Wanaka in time to wander through the town center and grab a good bite to eat and some mulled wine (which I had discovered my love for back in Melbourne) at a local hotspot. Wanaka was beautiful, our hostel had a cozy fireplace with a view of the lake and mountains, and I had secured a job in Wellington via a facetime interview. We were Queenstown bound and ready to party, which I hear is what QTown is known for…
